Inside Tom
Thomas Andrew Findlay was born in Miami, Florida in
1967 but moved to Mountain Brook, Alabama as a
young child. He has a BFA from Auburn University but
is a self-taught painter. His greatest influence came
from working with renowned folk artist Tres Taylor. Tom
also closely studied the works of Wolf Kahn and Marc
Chagall. In 2004, Tom decided to make painting a
full-time career. His regular subject matter consists of
landscapes and spiritual figures, which he has sold
through galleries, stores and at fine art festivals. His
landscape work is also published by Bentley
Publishing Group.
In 2010, Tom started to create the first six paintings of
a new series title "Temptations of Man." After the
passing of his older brother, Tom was inspired to paint
something that reflected the issues men battle. His
southern upbringing led him to a subject matter with
a spiritual undertone, yet reflected the real side of sin
and how men deal with it. Tom says this about his
work: "I have watched many male friends over the
years deal with their demons, and I have my own
demons. Most of our sinful nature is universal, the
same in many ways, yet vary through details. I like
creating artwork that tells this story. Although a little
disturbing to some, the work has been well received
and has opened honest dialog about man's many
temptations in this world."
